A Rare Day
It's not every day that we have something to howl about. Author copies of my new book, HELLO, MINNESOTA! arrived yesterday. While it's a twenty-page board book of Minnesota opposites with only forty-five words, HELLO, MINNESOTA represents more effort than you would imagine. The cover of the book simply says, "Words by Constance Van Hoven." "Creative ideas and words" would be more accurate.
My part of this project was to create ten pages of kid-friendly, Minnesota-related, easily illustrated opposites that represent as much of Minnesota as possible. The editor wanted a selection of opposites related to places that toddlers can appreciate. It was up to me to choose the favorite places and, by the way, get as many animals as possible into the book. And still work the opposite theme ...
I put my whole Minnesota heart into this puzzle of a project. I hope it shows! Now I'm busy creating a puppet show to go with the book. Using puppets is a great way to demonstrate opposites like "up and down," "open and closed," "hello and goodbye." I'll premiere the puppet show for my grandkids next week. Stay tuned for reviews.
